Speak Out

When they shot black youth, I didn't speak out because it wasn't my neighborhood  •  When they refused entry to refugees, I didn't speak out because I had a home  •  When they tortured people, I didin't speak out because I was afraid I'd be called a sympathizer  •  When they deported immigrants, I didn't speak out because I was a citizen  •  When they discriminated against LGBTQ people, I didin't speak out because my relationship was already recognized  • When they came for those that had spoken out, I still didn't speak out  •  Then they came for me and by that time no one was left to speak out.

This thought is adapted from the words of Martin Niemoeller, a protestant minister living in Nazi Germany.  He was amoun the millions of Jews, Catholics, gays, workers, clergy, political activisdts, Jehovah's Witnesses, Gypsies, mentally ill, etc. that the Nazis imprisoned, tortured and exterminated as "undesireables."

Today we see the same kind of marginalization of and discrimination against targeted groups of people, putting political and economic expedience ahead of human decency.

A time too late, for protest comes...Speak out now.
